Phil & Dan Birchinall are experts in Augmented Reality design and development who have worked successfully on school based heritage projects which used this technology in the past. The Project Team met with them on several occasions. Having briefed them about the project and looked at examples of the technology in action, we decided that this was the way to bring the project to life! We then set about working together to design something which would take people’s breath away!
the concept: We wanted to capture the work produced by the Young People and the heritage that the Project Team had discovered by producing a mural in the local library. This would form the centrepiece of the library, running right through the downstairs! The idea was that thousands of people would come to discover the Wonders of Wythenshawe for themselves this way, as expressed through the creativity of the Young People themselves.
Another project objective was to produce an education pack. To this end, as well as this website and the mural we decided to publish a book, “Wythenshawe – Our Garden City”, so that all 24 schools in Wythenshawe could have a full class set, to be used in literacy lessons and in Local History projects. The book also uses the same Augmented Reality technology to give it the ‘WOW Factor’! 1000 copies have now been given away and used!
